helical and spur gear

Gears are a special type of wheel with teeth that meshes together. Their primary duty is to transfer energy from one component of equipment to the other. Gears are used in many machines with all different types of gears. Two common types of gears which you will encounter are helical gear and spur gear. Even though they seem different in appearance, both kinds of gears matter a lot to the proper functioning and smooth running operation of machinery.

The spur gears are basic and simplest gear used in daily life with your bikes. The gears with the straight teeth that come right out from the center. They are reputed to be very sturdy and efficient — the capacity of good work is done with minimum extent wastage. However, the drawback of this type is that spur gears can be a bit noisy when they rotate especially in high-speed applications. In contrast, helical gears have oblique teeth. Its unique shape features promote a quieter and more efficient operation compared to spur gears. The helical gears are designed in such a way that the curved shape of each gear limits friction causing less power loss while operating at high speeds as well as handling more load.

Helical vs. Spur

Helical and spur gears may seem fundamentally different, but there is truth behind why each has its upsides as well as downsides. Most spur gears are simple to design and make, and they tend not to be very expensive. They are also very efficient, making them the ideal choice for a vast range of powers transmission requirements. The downside is that they can be quite noisy, particularly when set at high speeds. Moreover, spur gears could have an aggressive wear on their teeth; this is more likely to reduce life expectancy combined with time.
